Capital Fringe Review: ‘Harmony’ by Julia L. Exline

Quite frankly, this is a play that should be called Discord.

Directed by Matthew Sonnenfield, the plot centers around three women (Amelia Bane as Regina, Chelsea Reba as Isabel, and Alexandra Kelly as Tanya) who each find their lives complicated by a man (named The Man and played by Eric Molly) who has no redeemable qualities (and just sits there with a nonchalant air as they take their turns railing at him).

The acting is dry and robotic, the characters are flat, and a lot of time is wasted with dead air while actors pause and try to recall their lines. Awkward blocking and inconsistent lighting also add to the unfortunate list of calamities, but what makes this production the hardest to swallow is the dialogue, which is written in an erratic hodge-podge of eloquent, stately prose and crass street speech. Some of the similes are written beautifully, it is true, but they are juxtaposed in such a way that they stick out unnaturally, which makes this production almost painful to watch.
