Capital Fringe Preview: H5x7 by William Shakespeare, adapted and directed by Kevin O’Connell
“Suppose within the girdles of these walls,” begins Shakespeare’s Henry V, “Are now confined two mighty monarchies…Think when we talk of horses, that you see them.” The self-aware Chorus, who knows that a theatrical production cannot accurately depict the events of Henry V, inspires this bare-bones adaptation in which more than thirty characters are portrayed by a company of seven actors – hence, H5x7.
Taking our cue from the Chorus, Barabbas Theatre and Director Kevin O’Connell do not attempt realism in this production – “things/Which cannot in their huge and proper life/Be here presented.” Rather, we embrace the theatrical nature of our undertaking, relying on both the skills of our cast, who switch characters at the drop of a hat (sometimes literally), as well as on the imaginations of you, our audience – who, as the Chorus says, may “Piece out our imperfections with your thoughts.”
Movement, voice, and the simplest of props and costumes bring to imperfect life Shakespeare’s monarchs and soldiers, and we invite you to delve into this world with us: “Gently to hear, kindly to judge, our play.”
Featuring: Lizzi Albert, Kevin Dykstra, Vince Eisenson, Peter Holdway, Rachel Manteuffel, Elana Michelle, and Seth Rosenke.
