Doing the Timewarp: Meet the Cast of Washington Savoyards ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ Part Five: Caroline Wolfson

Here’s Part Five of meeting the cast of The Washington Savoyard’s The Rocky Horror Shows. Today: meet Caroline Wolfson.

I’m Caroline Wolfson and this is my DC professional debut. I just graduated in May from Syracuse University with a B.F.A. in Muiscal Theatre. I have done some local shows while I was home from college. The summers after my freshman and sophomore years I was in All Shook Up and Crazy for You, respectively, at Montgomery College Summer Dinner Theatre.

Why did you want to be part of this production?

I wanted to be a part of this production because I really wanted to get out there and start performing and put my degree to good use.

Who do you play in The Rocky Horror Show?

I’ve been cast as a Transylvanian/Phantom in the ensemble. We have a small ensemble where we are singing back-up in every number as well as dancing so I really wanted to take on that challenge of, essentially, sustaining stamina and energy for an entire show.

How do you relate to your character?

I’m basically creating my own character for the show so it isn’t really a matter of relating to the character so much as trying out things and creating something that can be as different from myself as I want.

How do you keep up your energy?

Warming up a lot. Physically and vocally.

What advice and suggestions did Director Jay Brock give you on how to play your  role?

Jay has been super great to work with. He gave us an idea of how he wanted the Phantoms/Transylvanians to function in the show, but has let us create our own characters and relationships which has proved to be endlessly fun.

Have you ever worked with your fellow cast members before?

I’ve worked with Ryan Patrick Welsh and Tim Rogan at Montgomery College Summer Dinner Theatre before and I was so excited when I found out they were going to be in the show. I haven’t worked with them in a few years so not only was it great to work with them again, but also I was completely amazed on the first day of rehearsal by how much they both have grown artistically.

What has been the biggest challenge learning your role?

It is challenging, I think across the board, to strike that balance of creating our own show while still trying to stay true to the cult tradition of Rocky Horror.

What will you be doing after The Rocky Horror Show closes?

After Rocky closes, I will be playing the title role in Pinocchio at Red Branch Theatre in Columbia, MD.

The Rocky Horror Show runs through November 4, 2012 at The Atlas Performing Arts Center – 1333 H Street NE, in  Washington, DC. For tickets, call (202) 399-7993, or order them online.
