With its fall kick off of the 2013-14 Season, Creative Cauldron celebrates the launch of its fifth year of programming at ArtSpace Falls Church. “We are thrilled to have a growing audience of subscribers and patrons, who have discovered our ‘little center for the arts in the Little City’,” Producing Director Laura Connors Hull commented. “In our fifth year, we will redouble our efforts to keep imagination at the center of all of our productions, and to provide our audiences with an up close and personal entertainment experience that they will long remember.”

Marry-Me-A-Little-WebThe season kicks off with Marry Me a Little (October 4-27, 2013) a charming and bittersweet musical revue featuring songs by Stephen Sondheim, the undisputed master of the contemporary Broadway musical. The show spotlights two urban singles sharing a Saturday night of sweet fantasies and deep yearning while never leaving the confines of their solitary apartments. Together they breathe new theatrical life and meaning into a collection of trunk songs that were culled from the final productions of Anyone Can Whistle, Follies, Company, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and A Little Night Music. Critically acclaimed composer and musical theater artist, Matt Conner, will direct a seasoned professional cast that includes Lou Steele, Dani Stoller, and Amy Conley. Press Night is Sunday, October 6 at 7:00 pm.

An Opening Season Gala Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013. The evening begins with a pre-performance reception at the Tax Analyst Building, 400 South Maple Avenue, with heavy hors d’oeuvres and libations catered by Pizzeria Orso, followed by the show at 8:00 pm and a post-performance Dessert Party with the Cast. Tickets are $100 per person. All proceeds will benefit the general operating fund.

Brothers-Grimm-WebCreative Cauldron’s Learning Theater, an ensemble of young performers who perform side by side with adult professionals, will present Tales from the Brothers Grimm (November 1 – 24). Adapted from the classic Grimm folktales, both familiar and lesser-known gems, the production will feature original music written by Matt Conner. Press Night is Saturday, November 2 at 7:30 pm.

Christmas-Cabin-WebChristmas Cabin of Carnaween (December 6- 22, 2013) will be presented for its fifth and final year. This delightful Irish folktale, set in the time of the great potato famine, follows the journey of a tinker’s child who longs to one day have a home of her own.  Her dream would go unfulfilled were it not for the wee people who come to her aid on a beautiful snowy night on a hillside in Carnaween. Conceived and directed by Laura Connors Hull, the production has become a favorite of audiences and critics alike, drawing praise from The Washington Post when it first premiered in 2009: “poignant and bracing….a reminder of the season’s rich ideals.” DCMetroTheaterArts’ Julia Exline gave the 2012 production a 5-star rave review. Press Night is Saturday, December 7 at 7:30 pm.

The fourth annual “Passport to the World” Festival (January 18 – February 22, 2014) will feature performances by professional music, dance and theater troupes representing cultures, and traditions from around the globe, including: Veronneau, Kamel Zennia, Ocean Celtic, Hui O Ka Pua ‘Ilima and a host of other performers. The final schedule will be released in mid September. On Sundays at 2 pm during the series, Creative Cauldron will present family friendly story theater presentations of international folk tales with musical accompaniment and dance provided by partnering groups. “Tales from the Pacific Islands,” “Tales from North Africa,” and “Tales from the Andes,” will be featured among these family-friendly offerings.

Alice-in-Wonderland-WebAlice in Wonderland (March 14 – April 6, 2014), one of the most enduring children’s classics ever written will be presented as Creative Cauldron’s spring Learning Theater production. Lewis Carroll’s famous story of a little girl’s fantastical journey through Wonderland will come to life through the inventive musical stylings of Matt Conner and over-the-top scenic and puppet designs of Margie Jervis. Press Night is Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 pm.

Shout-WebSHOUT! The Mod Musical (May 2–25, 2014), will take audiences back to the music, style and freedom of the 1960s. The revue follows five groovy gals as they come of age during those liberating days that made England sing. SHOUT! Is a non-stop journey through the infectious and soulful pop anthems and ballads that made household names of Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, and Lulu. Chart topping classic hits such as “To Sir With Love,” “Downtown,” “These Boots Are Made For Walking,” “Son of a Preacher Man,” and “Goldfinger” are woven together with hilarious, ‘60s era sound bites chronicling a time of unprecedented change from a uniquely female perspective. Press Night is Saturday, May 3 at 8:00 pm.

The season will be complemented with concerts performed by guest artists featuring a wide range of musical genres: from Blues, Bluegrass, Broadway standards, Folk, American roots music, to Tin Pan Alley.
