Doorway Arts Ensemble Revives Their Smash Hit from Capital Fringe
Many critics raved about Doorway Arts Ensemble’s hit show GODIVA DATES & ONE NIGHT STANDS at this summer’s Capital Fringe Festival. Regie Cabico’s latest spoken word play, GODIVA DATES & ONE NIGHT STANDS was a rousing success at the 2013 Capital Fringe Festival. This blend of storytelling, spoken word poetry and stand-up comedy chronicles Regie’s encounters with poet stalkers, Canadian Thanksgiving, sextings, and astrological whimsy.
Critics and audiences loved Regie’s mix of humor and raw emotion. Christina Frank on DCMetroTheaterArts wrote, “Godiva Dates and One Night Stands makes poetry approachable, and you’ll find your ear has tuned in without a struggle. It’s a great pick for anyone new to poetry, but a solid choice for any Fringer that wants a really well told story.” DC Theatre Scene said, “It’s laugh-out-loud, raucous humor mixed with just the right level of melancholy loneliness to remind you that at the center of all the ridiculousness is a man searching for love.” The DCist said, It’s difficult describing the words of a poet and humorist of Cabico’s caliber and doing them justice. Let him speak for himself and check him out…”
When asked why he wrote GODIVA DATES & ONE NIGHT STANDS, Regie says that “it grew from the work I was writing which focused on my intense travel and life in DC. I left New York City after 18 years and found myself in Washington, DC reinvigorating the spoken word and literary community. I found myself writing poems about dating and loneliness as a performing poet who travels frequently.
When Matt Ripa offered to produce a solo show of mine, the idea for Godiva Dates and One Night Stands came into fruition. I had to ask myself, “Why am I single?” Though GODIVA DATES & ONE NIGHT STANDS deals with some heavy topics, Cabico reminds us that “this show is a fun show. The whole show blurs the lines of what a poetry reading, stand up comedy show and storytelling can be.”
While there are many shows that deal with the trials and tribulations of the dating scene, DCMetroTheatreArts points out that, “the subject matter is nothing new, but Cabico spins a yarn so captivating he could be reading from the phone book and the audience would listen.”
