QUARTET FOR THE END OF TIME
A Free Chamber Music Concert
Sunday, February 22 at 4:00 pm
Clarendon United Methodist Church
606 N Ivy Street, Arlington VA
“The most ethereally beautiful music of the 20th century…”*
…and arguably the most important as well. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear this shattering and redemptive work, based on the Book of Revelation. The work was composed by Oliver Messiaen in a WWII prison camp, and premiered on broken down instruments by its inmates, for an audience of prisoners and guards alike.
Also on the program: the Divertimento from Gimpel the Fool, from an opera by David Schiff. Special guest Jerome Barry, founder of The Embassy Series, will read the Isaac Bashevis Singer short story that inspired Schiff’s opera. This seemingly simple tale, about a “foolish” man perennially hoodwinked by his wife and neighbors, is ultimately about how innocence transcends evil. The charming, Klezmer inflected music speaks of a lost world.
* Alex Ross, The New Yorker
