With music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and a book by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, Mame launched Angela Lansbury into Broadway royalty. The musical opened on Broadway in 1966, starring Lansbury and Beatrice Arthur. The production became a hit and spawned a film with Lucille Ball in the title role and Arthur reprising her supporting role, as well as a London production, a Broadway revival, and a 40th anniversary revival at The Kennedy Center in 2006.

Set in New York and spanning the great depression and world war ii, it focuses on eccentric bohemian Mame Dennis, whose famous motto is “Life is a banquet and most poor sons of bitches are starving to death.”

Her fabulous life with her wealthy friends is interrupted when the young son of her late brother arrives to live with her. They cope with the depression in a series of adventures.

Riverside Center Producing Artistic Director Patrick A’Hearn has put together an outstanding cast, production and design team. Riverside is thrilled to have DC. actress Sandy Bainum (Bway’s 42nd Street, Signature Theatre, Ford’s Theatre, and the upcoming CBS Criminal Minds) in the title role of Mame with Riverside favorite Kathy Halenda playing Vera Charles and the incomparable Sally Struthers from All in the Family and Gilmore Girls as Agnes Gooch.

Directing Mame is Dann Dunn whose many directing and choreographing credits include productions of Mame starring Loretta Switt and Andrea McArdle. Music Director Walter “Bobby” McCoy conducts the seven-piece orchestra. Set design is by Benjamin Burke, lighting design by Kathryn Moncure and costume design by Gaye Law.

The terrific ensemble includes Alan Hoffman, Robert Beard, Luke Newsome, Ethan Theriot, Jordan Deguzman Moral, Alona Metalf, Carol Hagy, Devon Clark, Andrea Kahane, Elizabeth Butler, Colby Leroy, Ian Lane, Calvin Malone, Sally Roehl, Kelsey Swann, Stephanie Wood, Bo Price, Christopher Prasse, Josh King, Kimberly Geipel, Andrew Prowant, and Mitchell Austin.
