2016 Capital Fringe Preview #37: ‘Play Cupid’ by Brett Steven Abelman

We might have been on over 100 dates between the seven us – in fact I’m betting that’s a low estimate. Myself (creator/director Brett Steven Abelman), assistant director Emily Cohen, and Play Cupid’s ensemble of five actors (Elizabeth Hansen, Allyson Harkey, Klenn Harrigan, Niusha Nawab, and Kara Turner) had numerous conversations about dating as part of our devising process for this show.

We had those conversations because Play Cupid is an interactive matchmaking show, where the audience meets five characters and then selects any two to pair up on a date. We wanted those dates to be informed by the wide variety of experiences people have while dating, and for those characters, in their dategoing, to ring true. It was never the intent for Play Cupid to be just light entertainment – it’s supposed to reflect and turn back on you your own ideas about romance and other people’s experiences. (But also the entertainment. That too.)

When you come to the show, we hope that you see yourself in one of the characters, and maybe something of people you or your friends have dated in the others. Maybe you’ll want to vote for a pairing that you wish you could have had, or one that will bring back a hilariously awkward memory. It’ll be up to you.
