This Saturday, at 2:15pm, noted Broadway Producer Jack Viertel will appear at the Gaithersburg Book Festival in conversation with Olney Theatre Center Artistic Director Jason Loewith to discuss Viertel’s book The Secret Life of the American Musical: How Broadway Shows Are Built.
As Senior Vice President of Jujamcyn Theaters, Jack Viertel has been instrumental in dozens of Broadway of productions, including many Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winners from Angels in America to The Producers to The Book of Mormon. He is also the Artistic Director of New York City Center’s acclaimed Encores! series. Viertel conceived the long-running Smokey Joe’s Café and Tony-nominated After Midnight and has been a creative consultant on shows such as Hairspray and Dear Evan Hansen.
Jason Loewith, Artistic Director of the Olney Theatre Center, is an accomplished producer, director and playwright. His numerous DC-area directing triumphs include recent productions of Sweeney Todd and Angels in America, Part One: Millenium Approaches. Loewith is the former Executive Director of the National New Play Network and an Outer Critics Circle and Lucille Lortel Awards-winner for the musical Adding Machine: A Musical, which he co-wrote with composer Joshua Schmidt. His book The Director’s Voice, Twenty Interviews, Volume 2, will be on sale at the Festival.
The festival is free to the public and Jack Viertel will be signing copies of his book immediately following the discussion.
