Watching the Tonys with DC Metro Theater Arts

DC Metro Theater Arts hosted a rousing Tony Awards watch party at DC sports bar Penn Social last Sunday. An enthusiastic crowd of Broadway fans competed for ticket prizes and answered trivia questions posed by DCMTA editor Nicole Hertvik and other participating theater reps.

Like eager middle-school kids trying to please their performing arts teacher, the crowd wildly waved their hands for an opportunity to answer tough trivia questions and were rewarded with tickets to leading DC theaters including Constellation, Monumental, Woolly Mammoth, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Studio Theatre, and Signature Theater.

One theater fan, Karyn Wilson, was a double winner who walked away with tickets from Signature Theatre and Studio Theatre!

A great time was had by all as they watched the complete CBS Tony Awards broadcast on Penn Social’s 23-foot projection screen. Fans were particularly thrilled by André De Shields win as best featured actor on a musical for his performance in Hadestown, and Ali Stroker’s historic win as best supporting actress for her role as Ado Annie in Oklahoma. Stroker is the first person who uses a wheelchair to win a Tony Award.

Kudos to Colleen Kennedy from Shakespeare Theatre Company, Darby DeJarnette from Monumental Theatre Company, and actor Meredith Richard for pitching in as game show hosts. They made the three-hour Tony Awards marathon feel like a sprint!
