Pandemic life may have shut down live theater, but DC’s Landless Theatre Company has always had a knack for making lemonade out of lemons. They found their own digital theater solution hiding in the closet: They are doing Urinetown: The Musical with sock puppets.
“We weren’t feeling enthusiastic about ‘virtual theater’ with all of the Zoom fatigue and technical issues,” said Producing Artistic Director Andrew Lloyd Baughman. “Watching people on screen can be tiresome, but watching puppets seemed like a lot of fun, and solved a multitude of other virtual theater challenges.”
Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards, Urinetown is a musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theater itself. Hilarious and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America’s greatest art forms.
One primary challenge Landless faced was how to safely gather musical actors for rehearsal and performance during the pandemic. The unique process allowed an international cast of voice actors to rehearse and record dialogue together in Zoom meetings, while asynchronously recording solo and choral vocals using the free Bandlab cloud platform.
Baughman (the voice of Sockwell, the puppet who plays Officer Lockstock) would mix audio and shoot puppet footage in his home studio in Frederick, Maryland, with puppets designed by and shipped directly from Laura Briggs of Sockrider Puppets.
“Our concept was of course inspired by The Muppets, who enact classics like A Christmas Carol and Treasure Island, with the thought that our puppet troupe members will return to perform other Broadway musicals,” said Baughman. “Also, the hilarious ’90s sock puppet Sifl and Olly Show, which I dare say had even lower production values than we are working with, here.”
Baughman says Urinetown, while an ambitious first project for a puppet musical, was a show that was “screaming to be performed by puppets.”
The Landless Theatre Company, founded in 2003, is dedicated to cultivating new and diverse audiences for theater. They are known nationally in recent years for originating heavy metal adaptations of Sweeney Todd (Prog Metal Version) and The Mystery of Edwin Drood (Symphonic Metal Version).
The voice cast of Urinetown includes Mikey Bevarelli, Stefanie Garcia, Sidney Davis, Karissa Swanigan, Andrew Lloyd Baughman, Felicia Lobo, Rachel Lockett, Julieta Gozalo, Honey Adraque, Ally Jenkins, and Matt Baughman (see headshots in trailer and bios below). Produced and Directed by Andrew Lloyd Baughman. Puppet Design by Laura Briggs, Sockrider Puppets.
