In celebration of the official theatrical release of the new film adaptation of the Broadway musical sensation Dear Evan Hansen on Friday, September 24, Universal Pictures and Fathom Events will present a special advance screening in cinemas on Thursday, September 23, preceded by a livestream Q&A with the cast and an exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette about the making of the movie.
The coming-of-age musical by Steven Levenson (book) and the songwriting team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (music and lyrics) tells the story of a high-school outsider with social anxiety disorder, who gains the popularity he craves after fabricating a friendship with a classmate who committed suicide. As he becomes more and more deeply entrenched in the lie, he is forced to make the decision of risking everything by coming clean or continuing the deception to retain his new-found acceptance and belonging.
The show opened to critical acclaim at Broadway’s Music Box Theatre in December 2016, and was nominated for nine awards in the 71st Tony Awards for the 2016-17 season. It won six, for Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, Best Orchestrations, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for Ben Platt.
Featuring a score of Grammy-winning songs, including the iconic “You Will Be Found,” “Waving Through a Window,” “For Forever” and “Words Fail,” the movie, directed by Stephen Chbosky, stars Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Award winner Platt reprising his titular Broadway role, along with six-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams, Oscar winner Julianne Moore, Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, Colton Ryan, Nik Dodani, DeMarius Copes, and Danny Pino. Platt, Stenberg, Dodani, and Pino are all scheduled to appear in the Q&A session.
